Mpower wins Rep. Ann Kuster’s 2023 Congressional App Challenge in New Hampshire’s Second District

Rep. Kuster has named Narayan Sajeev, a 12th grader at Nashua High School South, as the winner of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge in New Hampshire’s Second District.

When asked what inspired the creation of Mpower, the student said, “In New Hampshire, my home, the opioid crisis is more than a news story. It’s a daily struggle. Serving as the Chair of the Governor’s Youth Advisory Council on Substance Misuse and Prevention, I’ve seen firsthand its devastating effects on local communities. The serene landscapes and tranquil towns are marred by this invisible enemy, an epidemic that has sunk its claws deep into our communities. Mpower is my attempt to address this dire situation head-on by providing a comprehensive hub of resources that are easily accessible to anyone in New Hampshire.

One day, I was presenting at Parkside Middle School when I experienced a moment that still
echoes in my mind. I asked the audience if they knew someone battling addiction. An 8th grader, with tears welling up in his eyes, shared: My mother recently died from a fentanyl overdose. This gut-wrenching moment underscored the urgency of addressing this issue.

Conversations with students across New Hampshire revealed a significant gap in our education system: comprehensive mental health education was largely absent. Research indicates a strong correlation between inadequate mental health education and mental illness, which in turn is closely linked to substance abuse.

I wanted to help provide much-needed mental health education for New Hampshire students. However, I also identified another challenge: accessing mental health resources and recovery organizations specific to New Hampshire was difficult for many.

Mpower embodies my passion for community service, demonstrates my ability to identify and address societal issues, and highlights my skills in devising and implementing practical solutions.”

This year’s Challenge saw an unprecedented level of participation, with 374 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions, surpassing the previous record of 340. A remarkable 11,334 students from across the United States competed in this year’s Challenge, marking an impressive increase of nearly 1,000 participants compared to the previous record set in 2019. The enthusiasm and creativity these students display is a testament to the growing interest in technology and signal a bright future for American innovation. The surge of ingenuity continued with a whopping 3,645 original applications flooding in, nearly a thousand more than the previous year’s high. This remarkable growth showcases the exceptional talent and innovation within our nation’s youth.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival. The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from Omidyar Network, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2024, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
