TruckPark PA wins Rep. Chrissy Houlahan’s 2023 Congressional App Challenge in Pennsylvania’s Sixth District

Rep. Houlahan has named Faizaan Siddique, an 11th grader at Conestoga High School, as the winner of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge in Pennsylvania’s Sixth District.

When asked what inspired the creation of TruckPark PA, the student said, “Although the trucking industry plays an invaluable role in keeping our nation’s economy up and moving, trucking is especially important for businesses throughout the state of Pennsylvania. The first time I ventured through Pennsylvania, I remember feeling like the state seemed to have more trucks on the road than I had ever seen before. Upon moving into the area, I was even more astonished to find that highways such as the Pennsylvania Turnpike, I-76, and I-95 seemed to lack parking facilities for these trucks despite their abundance. Even though Pennsylvania nears the top of the list when it comes to the prevalence of trucking, it is not uncommon to find long stretches of road in various parts of the state where truck parking facilities are scarce or entirely absent. As a result, oftentimes truck drivers choose to park on the shoulder or in small townships, which can be both disruptive to the surrounding community and dangerous for passing drivers.

On the other hand, it felt necessary to address during the brainstorming process that truck drivers are not machines. They are humans and should be expected to operate like humans. However, due to tight driving schedules and unrealistic expectations, drivers often must prioritize their work at the expense of their physical and mental health. Given that driver health is overlooked and relatively understudied, I felt inspired to create an app that could solve the parking and health problem together through one cohesive solution. In it, I believe that we can spark positive change and bring attention to the challenges that truck drivers face on a regular basis.”

This year’s Challenge saw an unprecedented level of participation, with 374 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions, surpassing the previous record of 340. A remarkable 11,334 students from across the United States competed in this year’s Challenge, marking an impressive increase of nearly 1,000 participants compared to the previous record set in 2019. The enthusiasm and creativity these students display is a testament to the growing interest in technology and signal a bright future for American innovation. The surge of ingenuity continued with a whopping 3,645 original applications flooding in, nearly a thousand more than the previous year’s high. This remarkable growth showcases the exceptional talent and innovation within our nation’s youth.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival. The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from Omidyar Network, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2024, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
