CalcLynx wins Rep. Brian Mast’s 2025 Congressional App Challenge in Florida’s 21st District

Rep. Brian Mast has named Makai Pindell of Florida Atlantic University High School as the winner of the 2025 Congressional App Challenge in Florida’s 21st District. Their app CalcLynx is a web-based math scratchpad designed to serve as a digital alternative to traditional paper-based math tools.

When asked what inspired the creation of CalcLynx, Makai Pindell said, “As an avid user of Desmos, an online graphing calculator, the idea for CalcLynx was first sparked when I found myself intuitively using Desmos as a scratchpad to solve math problems. However, Desmos is limited to a single math ‘stack’ (i.e., the math is confined to a single expression list), making it challenging to work with problems that require multiple layers (e.g., integration by parts, partial fraction decomposition, or Lagrange multipliers). This made me wonder if there was a way to instantiate the expression list in a whiteboard, allowing users to place math anywhere.

“Initially, I attempted to search for variants of Excalidraw, a free and open-source whiteboard application, but I found no tools that allowed me to type math directly. The only available preview only supported direct LaTeX, meaning that users must write LaTeX code to insert their math expressions on the page.

“It was then that I realized I would have to build it myself. As I began building CalcLynx, it was originally a small solution to my own problem. However, when I noticed that many of my friends had difficulty with handwriting too (as seen in the demonstration slides), I realized the potential benefit and impact that this product could have. Inspired by other free, open-source software solutions, I designed CalcLynx with a serverless, frontend-only architecture, allowing anyone to use it for free and make modifications as needed.”

The 2025 Congressional App Challenge marked another record-setting year for the program. A total of 394 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives hosted App Challenges in their congressional districts, the highest level of participation in the program’s history. More than 13,800 students from across the country participated, submitting over 4,600 original apps focused on real-world challenges ranging from health and accessibility to education, sustainability, and civic engagement.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives that encourages middle school and high school students to learn to code, explore computer science, and build practical technology solutions for their communities. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and winning teams are invited to showcase their projects to Members of Congress, staff, and industry leaders at the annual #HouseOfCode celebration on Capitol Hill.

The Challenge is proudly bipartisan and reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to STEM education and preparing the next generation of American innovators for the future workforce. The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Infosys Foundation USA, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2026 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
