MeloCognia wins Rep. Darin LaHood’s 2025 Congressional App Challenge in Illinois’s 16th District

Rep. Darin LaHood has named Kavi Praanesh of Dunlap High School as the winner of the 2025 Congressional App Challenge in Illinois’s 16th District. Their app MeloCognia is an ML (AI)-powered health assistant designed to help detect Parkinson’s early using a combination of voice analysis and symptom tracking.

When asked what inspired the creation of MeloCognia, Kavi Praanesh said, “The inspiration behind MeloCognia comes from my grandpa’s experience with Parkinson’s. He wasn’t diagnosed until he was 70, and by that point, his lifestyle had already been significantly impacted. Everyday tasks became harder, and the treatments available were tough on someone his age—they often made things worse or caused side effects that reduced his quality of life. Seeing him go through that was really frustrating because if the condition had been identified earlier, the impact on his day-to-day life might have been less severe. I realized that many people experience the same problem: Parkinson’s is notoriously hard to detect in its early stages, and by the time doctors notice, a lot of damage has already been done. That motivated me to create something that could make early detection simple and accessible. I wanted an app that doesn’t require complex equipment, expensive procedures, or multiple specialist visits—something anyone could use at home. The idea is to give people a fighting chance by alerting them early, allowing for earlier medical consultation, lifestyle adjustments, or preventative care. Essentially, it’s about using technology to make a real difference in people’s lives and prevent others from going through the same struggle my grandpa faced.”

The 2025 Congressional App Challenge marked another record-setting year for the program. A total of 394 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives hosted App Challenges in their congressional districts, the highest level of participation in the program’s history. More than 13,800 students from across the country participated, submitting over 4,600 original apps focused on real-world challenges ranging from health and accessibility to education, sustainability, and civic engagement.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives that encourages middle school and high school students to learn to code, explore computer science, and build practical technology solutions for their communities. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and winning teams are invited to showcase their projects to Members of Congress, staff, and industry leaders at the annual #HouseOfCode celebration on Capitol Hill.

The Challenge is proudly bipartisan and reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to STEM education and preparing the next generation of American innovators for the future workforce. The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Infosys Foundation USA, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2026 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
