SoniSight wins Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s 2025 Congressional App Challenge in New Jersey’s 11th District

Rep. Mikie Sherrill has named Paul Rowe of Morris County School of Technology as the winner of the 2025 Congressional App Challenge in New Jersey’s 11th District. Their app SoniSight is an AI-powered web application designed to make ultrasound analysis clearer, more transparent, and more educational.

When asked what inspired the creation of SoniSight, Paul Rowe said, “Over the past year, I’ve found myself questioning the effectiveness of today’s healthcare system. In December of 2023, my mother underwent her annual mammogram and ultrasound, only to receive unclear and conflicting diagnoses. Her ultrasound revealed unusual masses, and she received differing advice from different radiologists. After much deliberation, my mother decided to have a biopsy. As we waited for the possibility of life-changing results, the lack of clear information left our family in a state of confusion and anxiety. Fortunately, her results were negative and although we were relieved, the emotional toll of those stressful weeks was never forgotten.

“As someone who attends a school that specializes in computer science, I couldn’t help but question why we faced so much uncertainty during such a critical time. I am aware of the capabilities and advancements of technology, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and computing software. These technologies have revolutionized all aspects of life, yet the healthcare system seems to fall behind in utilizing them to benefit the welfare of patients. At the end of this encounter, I found myself asking: Shouldn’t we be using technology, such as AI, more effectively in healthcare to improve diagnostic accuracy and avoid situations like this?

“This experience has solidified my passion for STEM, not just as an academic pursuit, but as a way to enact change in the lives of others. While I have always been drawn to the fields of science and technology, seeing the emotional toll my mother endured has made this interest deeply personal. I feel compelled to address these kinds of issues so that other families won’t have to go through the same anxiety my own family faced. That said, when I became aware of this challenge, it was just the right amount of motivation I needed to start making my ideas a reality.”

The 2025 Congressional App Challenge marked another record-setting year for the program. A total of 394 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives hosted App Challenges in their congressional districts, the highest level of participation in the program’s history. More than 13,800 students from across the country participated, submitting over 4,600 original apps focused on real-world challenges ranging from health and accessibility to education, sustainability, and civic engagement.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives that encourages middle school and high school students to learn to code, explore computer science, and build practical technology solutions for their communities. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and winning teams are invited to showcase their projects to Members of Congress, staff, and industry leaders at the annual #HouseOfCode celebration on Capitol Hill.

The Challenge is proudly bipartisan and reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to STEM education and preparing the next generation of American innovators for the future workforce. The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Infosys Foundation USA, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2026 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
