InvestNYou wins Rep. Nicholas Langworthy’s Congressional App Challenge in New York’s 23rd District
Rep. Nicholas Langworthy has named Shawn De Pedro, Jameson Sierzant, Kaeden Martinez, and Caton Tsao of Corning-Painted Post High School and D.W. Daniel High School as the winners of the 2025 Congressional App Challenge in New York’s 23rd District. Their app InvestNYou uses daily flashcards to teach users the fundamentals of personal financial literacy through active recall learning.
When asked what inspired the creation of InvestNYou, the students said, “Recently, we found out a few alarming statistics on personal financial literacy rates in the U.S. According to the Pew Research Center, only ~1 in 4 adults feel confident creating an investment plan, demonstrating unpreparedness among American adults involving investments. In addition, the TIAA institute reports that the average American answers less than half (48%) of basic finance questions correctly, which shows a lack of knowledge in investing, budgeting, and saving. Furthermore, the Pew Research Center reports that only ~1 in 4 adults feel confident creating an investment plan. Regarding budgeting and American families, ExcelinEducation reveals that about 65% live paycheck-to-paycheck, and fewer than half could handle a $1,000 emergency. Learning this, we realized the lack of financial education in our K-12 system, which causes later impacts of financial challenges. InvestnYou was born on the belief that anyone, from any educational background or age, deserves to have the opportunity to learn personal financial literacy. These skills are proven to be critical to one’s lifetime and especially to guarantee a sustainable retirement.
“By furthering financial education, especially towards the youth, we are promoting the good virtues of society of organizational planning, and to move national progress, leading to a healthier economy. We believe that the lack of financial education has caused perpetual economic inequalities in underserved areas.
“InvestNYou is designed to be an all-around, comprehensive app that builds personal financial literacy skills from the ground up, preventing these cases and addressing these issues. Our team believes that InvestnYou can be incorporated into K-12 school systems nationwide. However, our goal is to start small by working hard today to build a better tomorrow for a more secure financial future.”
The 2025 Congressional App Challenge marked another record-setting year for the program. A total of 394 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives hosted App Challenges in their congressional districts, the highest level of participation in the program’s history. More than 13,800 students from across the country participated, submitting over 4,600 original apps focused on real-world challenges ranging from health and accessibility to education, sustainability, and civic engagement.
The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives that encourages middle school and high school students to learn to code, explore computer science, and build practical technology solutions for their communities. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and winning teams are invited to showcase their projects to Members of Congress, staff, and industry leaders at the annual #HouseOfCode celebration on Capitol Hill.
The Challenge is proudly bipartisan and reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to STEM education and preparing the next generation of American innovators for the future workforce. The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Infosys Foundation USA, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.
The 2026 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
