FocusAI wins Rep. Michael McCaul’s 2025 Congressional App Challenge in Texas’s 10th District

Rep. Michael McCaul has named Aarjit Adhikari, Namish Joshi, and Jovan Nadar of Round Rock High School as the winners of the 2025 Congressional App Challenge in Texas’s 10th District. Their app FocusAI is a web application that transforms productivity into a fun, social, and gamified experience.

When asked what inspired the creation of FocusAI, the students said, “Our inspiration for creating this app came from a shared struggle that every member of our team experienced firsthand: staying focused in the age of constant distractions. Between online classes, phones, and social media, we noticed that it’s easier than ever to lose track of time and harder than ever to stay motivated. We wanted to design something that didn’t just block distractions, but actually motivated people to stay on task. In addition, in recent years, Texas and nationwide test scores have been decreasing at an alarming rate due in part to the huge amount of distractions kids are exposed to daily in today’s world.

“We were especially inspired by our friends and classmates who deal with ADHD and attention difficulties. Many of them said that traditional productivity tools (like basic to-do lists or study timers) felt repetitive and didn’t keep them engaged for long. That made us realize the problem wasn’t a lack of tools; it was a lack of motivation and connection. Productivity often feels lonely, so we wanted to build something that would make focus feel social and rewarding instead.

“That’s how the idea of gamifying productivity was born. We thought: what if getting work done felt like playing a friendly competition with your friends? What if you could share tasks, earn points, and climb a leaderboard together? Adding an AI chatbot made the experience even more interactive. Instead of a passive website blocker, the chatbot becomes a small companion that challenges you to think about your goals before giving in to distraction.

“Ultimately, this project was inspired by some of our generation’s biggest challenges: declining focus, digital burnout, and rising academic pressure, and our belief that technology can be part of the solution, not just the problem. We wanted to build something that helps students take back control of their attention, encourages teamwork, and makes self-improvement feel engaging instead of exhausting.”

The 2025 Congressional App Challenge marked another record-setting year for the program. A total of 394 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives hosted App Challenges in their congressional districts, the highest level of participation in the program’s history. More than 13,800 students from across the country participated, submitting over 4,600 original apps focused on real-world challenges ranging from health and accessibility to education, sustainability, and civic engagement.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives that encourages middle school and high school students to learn to code, explore computer science, and build practical technology solutions for their communities. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and winning teams are invited to showcase their projects to Members of Congress, staff, and industry leaders at the annual #HouseOfCode celebration on Capitol Hill.

The Challenge is proudly bipartisan and reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to STEM education and preparing the next generation of American innovators for the future workforce. The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Infosys Foundation USA, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2026 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
