CareLoop wins Rep. Lloyd Doggett’s 2025 Congressional App Challenge in Texas’s 37th District
Rep. Lloyd Doggett has named Viraj Velur, Shivank Ahuja, Vihaan Gandra, and Pranav Kulshrestha of Grisham Middle School and Westwood High School as the winners of the 2025 Congressional App Challenge in Texas’s 37th District. Their app CareLoop is a user-friendly mobile application designed primarily for caregivers to manage and monitor multiple patients with ease, to reduce their toil, stress, and to provide emotional support and information on financial resources when needed.
When asked what inspired the creation of CareLoop, the students said, “We began with the idea of helping dementia patients by creating an app to assist them in managing their schedules, help them cope with memory loss, make sure that they are safe, and stay in their confines. However, through our research and conversations, we discovered that caregiver stress and emotional and financial burnout are significant issues affecting 63 million Americans, and 64% of the caregivers showed an elevated risk of depression and anxiety.
“Our interactions with caregivers, social workers, and doctors highlighted the severity of this crisis. All of our parents are immigrants, and we understand the added responsibility they have in caring for our aging grandparents, often separated by great distances. Through our volunteer experiences in skilled nursing facilities, interviews with caregivers, we witnessed firsthand the immense challenges caregivers face daily in meeting the needs of those in their care. These experiences led us to create a new app that could transform the world of caregiving. We recognized that our efforts could make a significant difference, given the pressing need for creative and helpful solutions in this area. Even small changes can lead to substantial improvements in caregivers’ quality of life, enabling them to provide better care and support.”
The 2025 Congressional App Challenge marked another record-setting year for the program. A total of 394 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives hosted App Challenges in their congressional districts, the highest level of participation in the program’s history. More than 13,800 students from across the country participated, submitting over 4,600 original apps focused on real-world challenges ranging from health and accessibility to education, sustainability, and civic engagement.
The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives that encourages middle school and high school students to learn to code, explore computer science, and build practical technology solutions for their communities. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and winning teams are invited to showcase their projects to Members of Congress, staff, and industry leaders at the annual #HouseOfCode celebration on Capitol Hill.
The Challenge is proudly bipartisan and reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to STEM education and preparing the next generation of American innovators for the future workforce. The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Infosys Foundation USA, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.
The 2026 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
