Medlas AI wins Rep. Pramila Jayapal’s 2025 Congressional App Challenge in Washington’s Seventh District
Rep. Pramila Jayapal has named Neev Ansel and Rithik Sundaram of Lake Washington High School and Roosevelt High School as the winners of the 2025 Congressional App Challenge in Washington’s Seventh District. Their app Medlas AI is a medication management app built for caretakers in senior homes.
When asked what inspired the creation of Medlas AI, the students said, “The inspiration for Medlas AI began with something personal. Our close friend’s grandma lives in a senior home here in Seattle. One night, she missed her evening blood-pressure pill, Zestril. The caretaker, overwhelmed and managing dozens of residents, forgot to update the dosage chart. Her blood pressure spiked so severely that she had to be rushed to the hospital. Luckily, she survived, but she was one of the few who did. That experience hit hard, so we had the idea to solve the problem of medication management for seniors in its entirety. We started emailing and calling a large number of senior homes, asking what their medication management system was. How did they organize all the data? After calls with around 25 senior homes, we learned that their “system” was just juggling Excel spreadsheets and basic data tables on desktop computers.
“That’s when we realized we had to build. We built until we finally had our product, then went back to those same senior homes to make sure it aligned with what they needed. Through conversations with healthcare advocates and nonprofit leaders, we learned that the challenge isn’t a lack of care, it’s a lack of systems that keep people safe. That understanding shaped Medlas AI from the ground up. We believe that the problem isn’t that people don’t care about seniors; it’s that systems fail them. Caretakers rely on outdated tools, paper logs, and memory to manage dozens of residents’ complex medication plans. One gap in data can lead to harsh consequences. The inspiration came from one person, but the mission expanded to millions. Medlas AI is built for every family who worries when they leave their seniors unattended, built for the overworked caretaker, and built for every senior who deserves a life where a single mistake can’t determine their future.”
The 2025 Congressional App Challenge marked another record-setting year for the program. A total of 394 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives hosted App Challenges in their congressional districts, the highest level of participation in the program’s history. More than 13,800 students from across the country participated, submitting over 4,600 original apps focused on real-world challenges ranging from health and accessibility to education, sustainability, and civic engagement.
The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives that encourages middle school and high school students to learn to code, explore computer science, and build practical technology solutions for their communities. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and winning teams are invited to showcase their projects to Members of Congress, staff, and industry leaders at the annual #HouseOfCode celebration on Capitol Hill.
The Challenge is proudly bipartisan and reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to STEM education and preparing the next generation of American innovators for the future workforce. The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Infosys Foundation USA, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.
The 2026 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
