MediConnect wins Rep. Kim Schrier’s 2025 Congressional App Challenge in Washington’s Eighth District

Rep. Kim Schrier has named Pranav Venkatesh, Aviv Chatterjee, Aadi Saraf, and Ikhtyar Esmail of Eastlake High School and International Community School as the winners of the 2025 Congressional App Challenge in Washington’s Eighth District. Their app MediConnect is a secure and HIPAA-compliant medical data platform that allows EMTs to gain instant, authorized access to a patient’s critical health information during emergencies, all without compromising privacy.

When asked what inspired the creation of MediConnect, the students said, “Our inspiration for creating MediConnect started in an elementary school robotics competition (FLL), in which two of our teammates were asked to develop an idea to help people in their job fields. Together, they decided to work on a project to help EMTs, a career field that they found essential to our society. Their creation, a device which helps EMTs to determine patients’ vitals at the scene of an emergency, won first place and publicity from the mayor of Redmond, despite its underdeveloped nature.

“Despite the achievement, they found it to be incomplete, prompting them to create a team to develop MediConnect even further. When brainstorming how to make MediConnect better, one of the team members, whose sister has serious allergies, suggested a device that allows EMTs to obtain essential patient data like allergies and other conditions. Before we went all in on the idea, we went to our local EMTs and health providers to ask about the actual usefulness and applicability of this idea. Once we received confirmation from the EMTs regarding whether MediConnect could benefit their response times and safety, we fully understood the potential of our idea, doing our best to create an app that allows health providers to access patient medical information at the scene of an emergency.”

The 2025 Congressional App Challenge marked another record-setting year for the program. A total of 394 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives hosted App Challenges in their congressional districts, the highest level of participation in the program’s history. More than 13,800 students from across the country participated, submitting over 4,600 original apps focused on real-world challenges ranging from health and accessibility to education, sustainability, and civic engagement.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives that encourages middle school and high school students to learn to code, explore computer science, and build practical technology solutions for their communities. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and winning teams are invited to showcase their projects to Members of Congress, staff, and industry leaders at the annual #HouseOfCode celebration on Capitol Hill.

The Challenge is proudly bipartisan and reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to STEM education and preparing the next generation of American innovators for the future workforce. The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Infosys Foundation USA, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2026 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
