SYNTRA wins Rep. Gabe Vasquez’s 2025 Congressional App Challenge in New Mexico’s Second District
Rep. Gabe Vasquez has named Ishan Nagpal, Harshit Singh, Rishi Koodali, and Landon Sanxter of Edison Academy Magnet School and Las Cruces High School as the winners of the 2025 Congressional App Challenge in New Mexico’s Second District. Their app SYNTRA is built for households and communities aiming to understand and reduce their electricity costs, prevent grid strain, and increase resilience, especially during peak hours and outages.
When asked what inspired the creation of SYNTRA, the students said, “Our inspiration for SYNTRA came from personal experiences and challenges in general surrounding energy use. Every member of our team knows that our parents have dealt with some sort of sudden spike in electricity bills or even sudden power outages that were quite unpredictable (some of our friends even had to sleep over at our houses because their AC went out). We also realized that, in most households, people don’t believe that they have control over when their power is most expensive or how much strain one neighborhood can place on a grid. Simultaneously, millions of homes are installing solar panels and batteries. Unfortunately, there is no real way to share that energy.
“This growing problem of grid overloads and weather-driven blackouts motivated us, mainly because they have become so common. For example, in June 2024, more than 4,500 residents on the East Mesa of Las Cruces, New Mexico were left without power due to a major outage. Studies also show that over 80% of major U.S. outages are weather-related, and 1 in 4 homes reported losing power in the last year alone. That shows us how vulnerable energy infrastructure is, and why becoming more self-reliant is important.
“SYNTRA takes this problem and turns it into an opportunity for us to grow. Instead of relying only on utility companies, what if communities could predict and even trade energy among themselves? We wanted our app to not only track energy data but also transform this into insights that communities could actually act upon. SYNTRA, overall, aims to empower all of us.”
The 2025 Congressional App Challenge marked another record-setting year for the program. A total of 394 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives hosted App Challenges in their congressional districts, the highest level of participation in the program’s history. More than 13,800 students from across the country participated, submitting over 4,600 original apps focused on real-world challenges ranging from health and accessibility to education, sustainability, and civic engagement.
The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives that encourages middle school and high school students to learn to code, explore computer science, and build practical technology solutions for their communities. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and winning teams are invited to showcase their projects to Members of Congress, staff, and industry leaders at the annual #HouseOfCode celebration on Capitol Hill.
The Challenge is proudly bipartisan and reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to STEM education and preparing the next generation of American innovators for the future workforce. The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Infosys Foundation USA, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.
The 2026 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
