College Collage wins Rep. Steve Scalise’s 2023 Congressional App Challenge in Louisiana’s First District

Rep. Scalise has named Alex Jorns, a 12th grader at Chalmette High School, as the winner of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge in Louisiana’s First District.

When asked what inspired the creation of College Collage, the student said, “The inspiration for College Collage came about when my sister began her college search. As she began looking into colleges in the United States, I could see she was getting overwhelmed. The sheer amount of options distracts from what could be the perfect college, which can not only be frustrating but also detrimental to one’s education. At the time, I did not have the means to tackle the problem, but as I grew my coding abilities through an all-women, free coding camp, Koding With Klossy, my goal became more attainable during my senior year. Being in the midst of my college application process, my drive for College Collage has strengthened as I truly believe it could serve to relieve some of the stress myself, and my peers, are experiencing. Every day, I and my classmates receive tons of emails and pamphlets that we barely look at as there are so many. With an application like College Collage, students will have a better understanding of their college matches. Then, when students receive promotions or complete their research, they will already have an idea of which colleges they should explore. With many high school seniors looking to apply to college, College Collage could be marketed to seniors across the United States. Even if students don’t feel that college is the right fit, College Collage provides helpful data visualizations and resources that can help them choose the best path. With the college market so saturated and so many options being pushed, it can be overwhelming to start the application process, but College Collage can help.”

This year’s Challenge saw an unprecedented level of participation, with 374 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions, surpassing the previous record of 340. A remarkable 11,334 students from across the United States competed in this year’s Challenge, marking an impressive increase of nearly 1,000 participants compared to the previous record set in 2019. The enthusiasm and creativity these students display is a testament to the growing interest in technology and signal a bright future for American innovation. The surge of ingenuity continued with a whopping 3,645 original applications flooding in, nearly a thousand more than the previous year’s high. This remarkable growth showcases the exceptional talent and innovation within our nation’s youth.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival. The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from Omidyar Network, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2024, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
