About Briana Berger

Briana Berger, 26, won the Congressional App Challenge in 2016 in Florida’s 3rd District. She is a software engineer at Google working on security for Fuchsia, a next-generation operating system.

CAC: How did participating in the Congressional App Challenge contribute to your personal journey, career path, and accomplishments so far?

BB: CAC made me proud of what I could create with technology. It encouraged me to continue following my passion and to trust my own voice over the doubts of others.

CAC: Try to remember back to competing in the CAC – what was your app about and why did you create it?

BB: Growing up, my family road-tripped across the country a lot. I saw countless instances of driver fatigue causing major accidents, but one image has always stuck with me: a truck careening off the side of a mountain. To help prevent tragedies like that, I created SleepBeep, an app that helps keep drivers alert.

CAC: What are you most proud of in your academic or professional career thus far?

BB: Getting into Stanford and working at Google are the accomplishments I’m most proud of. With my mom not having attended college and my dad having pursued higher education in response to the military draft during that time, the roadmaps to places like Stanford and Google simply didn’t exist in my family. I’m proud of finding my way.

CAC: Let’s look into the future – where do you hope to be in 2035?

BB: A lead executive in the security systems space.

CAC: What excites you most about the future of technology and innovation?

BB: Honestly, what excites me most is the growing commitment to making technology secure by design. The most important innovation on the horizon isn’t just a single product, but a future where security isn’t a feature you add on—it’s the default. We’re creating incredibly powerful tools, but their potential is capped if people can’t rely on them safely.
