Debugged S5 E3: Why CS? Coding to Problem Solve with Karim Meghji
Hello! Welcome back to Debugged, the Congressional App Challenge’s alumni-led podcast that connects the country’s youth with technology by debugging the intricate world of computer science.
In this episode, Host Suhaani Sodhi and Guest Host Tushar Mehta speak with Karim Meghji, Chief Product Officer of Code.org!
Karim shares his personal journey into the world of tech, which actually didn’t start with computer science. After initially planning to study electrical engineering, a single computer science class changed his trajectory. He realized that CS isn’t just about code, but a structural way to think about problem-solving. His foundational belief that technology’s true purpose is to solve human problems guided his career, from his job at Symantec to his current role leading product development at Code.org.
As CPO, Karim is at the forefront of shaping how students and teachers interact with technology. He discusses Code.org’s mission to make computer science an accessible, intrinsic part of education for everyone. A major part of his mission today is embracing the transformational moment of—you guessed it!—Generative AI. Karim explains how his team is now developing new curricula, like “AI + CS,” and innovative tools like an AI teaching assistant to support educators and prepare students for the future they will be living in.
Tune into this week’s episode of Debugged to hear Karim’s own insights into the future of AI in the classroom, his philosophy on balancing engagement and usability, and his key advice for young creators on how to build an app that truly makes a difference!
