Debugged S3 E4: Becoming You with Suzy Welch

Hi App Challengers! Welcome back to Debugged, the Congressional App Challenge’s alumni-led podcast that connects the country’s youth with technology by debugging the intricate world of computer science!

In the fourth episode of Season Three, host Medha Gupta chats with business journalist and best-selling author Suzy Welch about her method for crafting an authentic life that you want and need. The key is identifying three spheres: your values, your aptitudes as you define them, and your opportunities. At the intersection of these three is your purpose: not only what you can do for a fulfilling life, but how you can leave the world a better place, as well.

Originally a crime investigator in Miami, Welch discovered her love for business accidentally. After the business editor quit from her publication, she was tasked with taking over a job that she did not want, nor did she think was important. However, she immediately saw the appeal of building something up from scratch, rather than critiquing it as journalists often have to do.

Welch reflects on her career and the kind of advice that she took to create it. She shares a valuable lesson about being the author of your own life, rather than an editor. However well-intentioned they may be, she stresses that it is the fight for your life not to let other people tell you who you are.

Furthermore, to student listeners, she shares how equally important it is to develop emotional intelligence as it is to develop academic intelligence, and specific career skills like coding.

Welch teaches two popular classes at the NYU Stern School of Business about leadership and building a happy life for yourself. Tune in to the newest episode of Debugged to get a glimpse into Welch’s insights, and a plethora of advice for young listeners.
